Custom Airtight Zipper Manufacturer
RHF Zipper is a professional airtight zipper manufacturer in China with 19 years of zipper development and export experience, producing industrial grade airtight zipper solutions for drysuit, marine, and protective equipment brands worldwide.
Every airtight zipper we ship is built to a customer specification — structure, size, sealing performance, and branding developed around your product.
Airtight Zipper vs Waterproof Zipper: Know What You Are Specifying
Both products block water. They are built for completely different levels of exposure, and choosing the wrong one is the most common sourcing mistake in sealed closures — usually discovered only after the product is already in the field.
The simplest way to decide: if water only ever hits the outside of your product, a waterproof zipper is enough. If your product goes under water, holds internal pressure, or protects something that must stay sealed, you need an airtight zipper.
Waterproof Zipper — Everyday Water Exposure
A waterproof zipper handles splashes, rain, and water droplets during normal daily use. Water hits the surface and runs off; it never builds pressure against the closure. For everyday consumer products this is the correct and cost-effective specification.
- Everyday apparel and rainwear
- Laptop bags, backpacks, and daily-use luggage
- Consumer dry bags and water-resistant pouches
- Cooler bags, fishing waders, motorcycle apparel, waterproof footwear
Airtight Zipper — High-Standard Sealing Environments
An airtight zipper is engineered for demanding environments where the closure must hold against sustained pressure — full immersion, internal inflation, or industrial containment. In these applications the seal is not a comfort feature; it is what allows the product to function at all.
- Full immersion: drysuits, semi-dry suits, diving equipment, professional outdoor packs submerged in water
- Pressure retention: packrafts, water walking balls, inflatable boats, inflatable tents, hyperbaric chambers
- Life safety: immersion suits, survival suits, hazmat and chemical protective clothing
- Industrial containment: isolation enclosures, cleanroom panels, chemical containment, oil boom barriers, flexible tanks
- Medical: protective gowns, medical mattress covers, isolation shelters
The commercial consequence is direct. Specify a waterproof zipper for an inflatable product and it bleeds pressure in service — even though the zipper passed every water test it was given. Specify an airtight zipper for a laptop bag and you pay for sealing performance the product will never use.
| Your Application | Water Exposure | What You Need |
|---|---|---|
| Everyday apparel, laptop bags, backpacks | Rain, splash, droplets on the surface | Waterproof zipper |
| Consumer dry bags, cooler bags, waders, footwear | Heavy rain, brief splash contact | Waterproof zipper |
| Drysuits, diving suits, submerged outdoor packs | Full immersion under water pressure | Airtight zipper |
| Packrafts, inflatable boats and tents, hyperbaric chambers | Internal air pressure held over time | Airtight zipper |
| Immersion suits, hazmat and chemical protective wear | Life-safety sealing, certified performance | Airtight zipper |
| Isolation enclosures, cleanrooms, flexible tanks | Industrial containment, gas and particulate | Airtight zipper |
| Medical gowns, mattress covers, isolation shelters | Controlled sealed environment | Airtight zipper |
For outdoor consumer products where water mainly lands on the surface, waterproof zipper construction is usually the right balance of performance and cost. For submerged packs, inflatable structures, drysuits, protective clothing, and industrial products, the closure must resist pressure, not just water droplets — this is where an airtight zipper becomes the safer specification.
A practical sourcing check: match the zipper test method to the real use environment.
Not every waterproof or airtight application requires the same sealing strength. The required pressure resistance depends on the product environment, such as water immersion depth, inflation pressure, or protection requirements. RHF validates airtight zipper performance through pressure testing under specified conditions. A typical verification method is an inflation test at 30 kPa held for 30 seconds, requiring zero leakage and zero bubble formation, For higher-demand applications, customized sealing levels such as 80 kPa or 100 kPa can be developed and tested according to customer requirements..

2. Airtight Zipper Size
Five sizes across three series — #3, #5, #6, #8 and #10 — from lightweight woven tape through heavy-duty resin construction. Custom dimensions developed on request.
Plastic Tooth & Toothless Series
| Model | Structure | Tooth Width | Total Width | Edge Tape Width | Sealing Strength | Cross Tension | Length |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| #10 | Wide-tape open-end | 10 mm | 45 / 70 mm | 20 mm | 80 kPa | 900 N/5cm | 14–1000 cm |
| #10 | Wide-tape single-open | 10 mm | 45 / 70 mm | 20 mm | 80 kPa | 900 N/5cm | 5–1000 cm |
| #10 | Closed-end | 10 mm | 45 / 70 mm | 20 mm | 60 kPa | 1100 N/5cm | 14–1000 cm |
| #6 | Closed-end | 6.7 mm | 40 mm | 20 mm | 35 kPa | 600 N/5cm | 5–1000 cm |
| #5 | Toothless | 5.1 mm | 40 mm | 20 mm | 35 kPa | 80 N/5cm | 12–1000 cm |
Note the deliberate trade-off in the #10 range: open-end and single-open builds deliver higher sealing pressure at 80 kPa, while the closed-end build exchanges sealing pressure for substantially higher cross tension at 1100 N/5cm. Specify according to whether your application loads the closure with pressure or mechanical force.
Nylon Series
| Model | Size | Waterproof Rating | Total Width | Tooth Width | Tooth Height | Tape Thickness | Min. Overall Length | Weight | Flat Tensile |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| S80 | #8 | IPX7 | 41 mm | 8.0 mm | 3.5 mm | 0.8 mm | ≥30 cm | ~48 g/yd | ≥700 N |
| S60 | #5 | IPX6 | 31 mm | 6.2 mm | 3.0 mm | 0.75 mm | ≥25 cm | ~33 g/yd | ≥700 N |
| S40 | #3 | IPX6 | 25 mm | 4.5 mm | 2.4 mm | 0.7 mm | ≥20 cm | ~23 g/yd | ≥700 N |
Tape width can be widened or narrowed on request. Tooth width reference measured manually, ±5%. For specifications outside this range, consult our sales team.
3. Airtight Zipper Style
Structure selection determines both sealing behaviour and how the closure integrates into your product. RHF Zipper provides four sealed structures tailored for technical apparel, storage, and pressurised applications.
Wide-Tape Open-End
Full separation — drysuits, protective garments
Closed-End
Maximum cross tension — storage, covers, marine
Wide-Tape Single-Open
Partial entry — specialised garment designs
For custom drysuit zipper development, the wide-tape open-end structure is most frequently specified. It provides convenient entry and exit while holding 80 kPa sealing performance.
4. Sealing Structure
Mechanical seal, not surface film. This is where sealed closures differ from one another, and it determines service life.
Many airtight zippers depend on a laminated surface film to form the barrier. That film is the seal — and it is also the failure point. Films delaminate, crack, and hydrolyze with age and UV exposure. It is no coincidence that film-based premium brands market hydrolysis resistance as a headline feature: degradation of the film layer is the known weakness of that architecture.
Our airtight zippers work differently. The barrier forms through high-pressure mechanical sealing at the tooth engagement zone, not through a coating on the surface.
- Precision tooth engagement — the slider drives Plastic elements into a tight-tolerance interlock
- Sustained mechanical compression — the interlock generates continuous contact pressure along the full chain
- TPU tape extends the seal — carrying the barrier outward from the chain to your fabric
- Pressure-assisted closure — internal pressure loads the engagement harder, tightening the seal as pressure rises rather than peeling it open
A mechanical seal cannot delaminate.
There is no film layer to crack, peel, or hydrolyze. Sealing performance is engineered into the geometry of the closure — which is why specification holds across 1,000 cycles from -30°C to 70°C.
On the known weak point: in any pressure-resistant closure, the most common leak path is the slider cavity, where the slider body sits over the chain. Consistent sliding force across the full stroke is what keeps that cavity sealed, which is why we hold it to ≤55 N and verify every batch by inflation test at 30 kPa.
5. Installation & Bonding
The TPU tape accepts four integration methods. Selection depends on your substrate and production line.
| Method | Best For |
|---|---|
| High-frequency welding | TPU and PU coated fabrics — strongest seal, zero stitch holes |
| Sewing | Conventional textile assembly |
| Sealing tape | Hybrid construction |
| Adhesive bonding | Substrates unsuitable for welding |
Every stitch hole is a potential leak path. For dry bags, inflatable products, and pressurised enclosures, high-frequency welding removes the most common field failure mode entirely — the tape fuses into the fabric rather than being stitched onto it. Tell us your substrate at the specification stage and we will prepare the tape accordingly.
6. Length & Width
Long-format lengths to 1000 cm support sealed panel construction in tents, covers, and large enclosures.
- Length range: 5 cm to 1000 cm
- Total width: 25 mm to 70 mm depending on series
- Tape width: customisable wider or narrower
- Tolerance: tooth width reference measured manually, ±5%
7. Puller & Slider Options
Sliders are available in metal or plastic. Pullers can be selected from over 1,000 existing styles or developed to your drawing.
- Shape — customised to your requirement
- Color — gold, silver, black, and custom finishes
- Color process — spray painting, electroplating, electrophoresis
- Logo process — embossing, printing, laser engraving
- Slider size — matched to zipper specification
Custom molds are stored permanently at no additional cost and replaced free of charge if worn through long-term use.
8. Color & Branding
Standard tape color is black. Custom color matching is available through GCC, Pantone, or YKK color cards, or confirmed against your physical sample.
For brands developing OEM/ODM airtight zipper programmes, we support logo engraving on pullers, custom tape branding, and customer-specified packaging — so the closure carries your identity rather than reading as a generic component.
