Airtight Zipper vs Waterproof Zipper: Know What You Are Specifying

Both products block water. They are built for completely different levels of exposure, and choosing the wrong one is the most common sourcing mistake in sealed closures — usually discovered only after the product is already in the field.

The simplest way to decide: if water only ever hits the outside of your product, a waterproof zipper is enough. If your product goes under water, holds internal pressure, or protects something that must stay sealed, you need an airtight zipper.

Waterproof Zipper — Everyday Water Exposure

A waterproof zipper handles splashes, rain, and water droplets during normal daily use. Water hits the surface and runs off; it never builds pressure against the closure. For everyday consumer products this is the correct and cost-effective specification.

Airtight Zipper — High-Standard Sealing Environments

An airtight zipper is engineered for demanding environments where the closure must hold against sustained pressure — full immersion, internal inflation, or industrial containment. In these applications the seal is not a comfort feature; it is what allows the product to function at all.

For submerged packs, inflatable structures, drysuits, protective clothing, and industrial products, the closure must resist pressure, not just water droplets — this is where an airtight zipper becomes the safer specification.

A practical sourcing check: match the zipper test method to the real use environment.

Not every waterproof or airtight application requires the same sealing strength. The required pressure resistance depends on the product environment, such as water immersion depth, inflation pressure, or protection requirements. RHF validates airtight zipper performance through pressure testing under specified conditions. A typical verification method is an inflation test at 30 kPa held for 30 seconds, requiring zero leakage and zero bubble formation, For higher-demand applications, customized sealing levels such as 80 kPa or 100 kPa can be developed and tested according to customer requirements..

Note the deliberate trade-off in the #10 range: open-end and single-open builds deliver higher sealing pressure at 80 kPa, while the closed-end build exchanges sealing pressure for substantially higher cross tension at 1100 N/5cm. Specify according to whether your application loads the closure with pressure or mechanical force.

For custom drysuit zipper development, the wide-tape open-end structure is most frequently specified. It provides convenient entry and exit while holding 80 kPa sealing performance.

4. Sealing Structure

Mechanical seal, not surface film. This is where sealed closures differ from one another, and it determines service life.

Many airtight zippers depend on a laminated surface film to form the barrier. That film is the seal — and it is also the failure point. Films delaminate, crack, and hydrolyze with age and UV exposure. It is no coincidence that film-based premium brands market hydrolysis resistance as a headline feature: degradation of the film layer is the known weakness of that architecture.

Our airtight zippers work differently. The barrier forms through high-pressure mechanical sealing at the tooth engagement zone, not through a coating on the surface.

  • Precision tooth engagement — the slider drives Plastic elements into a tight-tolerance interlock
  • Sustained mechanical compression — the interlock generates continuous contact pressure along the full chain
  • TPU tape extends the seal — carrying the barrier outward from the chain to your fabric
  • Pressure-assisted closure — internal pressure loads the engagement harder, tightening the seal as pressure rises rather than peeling it open

A mechanical seal cannot delaminate.

There is no film layer to crack, peel, or hydrolyze. Sealing performance is engineered into the geometry of the closure — which is why specification holds across 1,000 cycles from -30°C to 70°C.

On the known weak point: in any pressure-resistant closure, the most common leak path is the slider cavity, where the slider body sits over the chain. Consistent sliding force across the full stroke is what keeps that cavity sealed, which is why we hold it to ≤55 N and verify every batch by inflation test at 30 kPa.

5. Installation & Bonding

The TPU tape accepts four integration methods. Selection depends on your substrate and production line.

Every stitch hole is a potential leak path. For dry bags, inflatable products, and pressurised enclosures, high-frequency welding removes the most common field failure mode entirely — the tape fuses into the fabric rather than being stitched onto it. Tell us your substrate at the specification stage and we will prepare the tape accordingly.

Long-format lengths to 1000 cm support sealed panel construction in tents, covers, and large enclosures.

7. Puller & Slider Options
